Vanamali Ashram is a small ashram situated in Rishikesh. We have been
helping the poor children of our locality for about twenty years. We
have been distributing clothes, blankets and sweaters to the children
and the poor people but we thought it would be better if we could
give them some work by which they could earn a living without the
burden of having to accept charity. Hence we taught a few of the
young girls to do these wild flower cards. These serve a double
purpose since it teaches them to appreciate the beauty of the nature,
which surrounds them. They have begun to notice so many small,
delicate plants and flowers, which they had never noticed before.
They have to pick the flowers from the jungles and fields and hedges
and not from garden. They have to press them for at least one week
before pasting them into designs of their own making. We provide the
natural paper for them, which we buy from Delhi. All the profits from
the sales of these cards go back to the girls. This helps them to buy
many things for their family as well as support their own education
and school fees for their sisters and brothers.
